The Illinois Tollway – Driving the Future – Featuring AMS Earh Movers

As a single parent in 2008 with little background in the construction field, Julie Savitt became the sole owner of AMS Earth Movers, a certified disadvantaged, woman owned small business.

Specializing in hauling aggregate, asphalt, non-contaminated waste and other construction materials, the Lake Villa based company currently has nine contracts as part of the Move Illinois Program, including contracts for 2015 projects worth $4 million.

Savitt says the Illinois Tollway’s dedication to ensuring economic opportunities for small contractors enables start-up firms like hers to prosper and diversify. In 2012, as a result of its ongoing Move Illinois projects, AMS opened an aggregate supply business and was able to purchase additional equipment to expand its capacity for flatbed and lowboy hauling and will add four tractor-truck combinations to its fleet.

Savitt credits much of her recent success to participation in the Tollway’s Construction Coaching for Growth (CC4G) Program. She draws on her success with CC4G to motivate others in her work with the Women’s Business Development Center in Chicago, the Federation of Women Contractors and other organizations dedicated to mentoring women and minorities.
